“MATCHING CAREGIVING SKILLS AND ACTIONS TO THE STAGES OF PROGRESSION OF DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMER'S

Presented by Tom Rinkoski, M.Ed.

Tuesday, March 19, 2013 from 6-7:30pm

Millhopper Library, Meeting Room B

Free and Open to the Public

In order to become an effective caregiver for a person with dementia and/or Alzheimer’s one needs to be aware of the stages of the disease our person is in, and how to best fit our language, skills and actions so as to reduce stress, confusion and maximize contentment. In this session we will explore dementia progression using the Allen Stages and talk about proper fit of caregiving skills. We will excerpt material from the “Savvy Caregiving Training” that is available in our community to all caregivers.

This presentation by Tom Rinkoski is part of the ongoing Friends Across the Ages "Speaker/Workshop Series." Tom is the Caregiver Coach at Elder Options, the Mid Florida Area Agency on Aging. He does Caregiver Trainings, named “Become a Savvy Caregiver,” in 16 counties in North Central Florida with special attention to caregivers working with persons with Dementia and/or Alzheimer’s. Tom was caregiver to his father who had Alzheimer’s and continues as Caregiver for his mother. Tom has an M.Ed. and has a professional background in education and training.

FRIENDS ACROSS THE AGES
SPRING FESTIVAL (April 1st-7th)

AND

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION PARTY (April 7th)

Our annual Spring Festival is coming up very soon! The festival will be held the week of April 1-7, with events at the various nursing homes we serve throughout the week. We will conclude the festival with our annual Spring Volunteer Appreciation Party on Sunday, April 7th from 2-4pm. The party is always a special time, held in the beautiful courtyard at Barr Systems with food, music, and special recognitions for volunteers. All members and supporters of Friends, plus family, friends, and anyone else who is interested are welcome and encouraged to attend this celebration, which is our biggest event of the year. All are welcome at any of the events of the Spring Festival as well.

Watch our April “Nursing Home News” for more details on all of the events, and we will also be posting a flyer on our website soon—we will send you a quick notification once that is up. Contact info@acrosstheages.org if you have any questions or would like to sign up to attend any of the events.

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you. If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well. Here are our special events for March:
