Nursing Home News--September 2012

This is the March 2012 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

Tuesday, September 11th from 6-7:30 at Barr Systems

Free and Open to the Public

On Tuesday, September 11th, Friends Across the Ages will be continuing our Speaker/Workshop series with a special roundtable discussion to mark this national day of service and remembrance. We will talk about how the connections we make as we strive to “bridge generations through ageless friendship” fit into the larger picture of building a better world—and how friendships with people we might not otherwise get to know enrich our lives and make us better people. We will conclude our time together with a moment of silent reflection. Please consider joining us for this special evening, and bring a friend.

This roundtable discussion will be held from 6-7:30 on 9/11 at Barr Systems, located at 4500 NW 27th Avenue. Directions can be found at under the heading “Friends Across the Ages Office.” All are welcome--this event is free and open to the public. Contact for more information. If you would like to learn more about the national day of service and remembrance you can check out this website:

We have had a steady flow of new volunteer applications coming in over the past few weeks, but we can still use a few more very dedicated one-to-one volunteers to join one of our one-to-one visitation groups. These groups involve an initial commitment of at least 12 weeks of one hour visits, with the idea that most volunteers will stick around much longer, as they form lasting friendships with the people they visit at the nursing home. The groups meet briefly at the beginning of the designated time to allow volunteers a chance to check in with one another and support one another, then fan out to visit their friends at the nursing home.

We have 5 groups that meet at various times/days throughout the week, but the groups particularly in need of a few more dedicated volunteers right now are our Sunday 3pm group, our Monday 6:30pm group and our Thursday 6pm group. Volunteers who join these groups should be looking for a challenge and a long term commitment (if not, there are other kinds of volunteering at the nursing home that might be a better fit). Please help us spread the word! For more information, contact us at

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you. If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well. Here are our special events for September:
