Nursing Home News--September 2015

This is the September 2015 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

WELCOME BACK STUDENTS, AND WELCOME NEW VOLUNTEERS!

We would like to extend a very warm welcome back to all of our student volunteers who were gone for the summer and have now returned. We know your friends at the nursing home are glad to see you and are eager to hear all your stories from the summer. We are glad you are back!

We would also like to welcome those new volunteers who have joined us since the beginning of the school year. New volunteer applications are coming in all the time. It is always so heartening to meet people who care enough to take that step of becoming a volunteer in order to share their time with our friends at the nursing homes. We are glad to have you all with us!

LETTERS TO THE TROOPS

One of our volunteers at Parklands, Betsy Thewes, has come up with another wonderful idea for the Parklands residents and volunteers to do together: write letters to the troops. She learned that there is a volunteer who is planning to do this with a couple of patients at Shands on Wednesday, 9/9, so she thought our group could do this as well, and she will bring the letters over afterwards to be sent out along with their letters. This event will be Wednesday, September 9th from 10:30-11:30pm at Parklands. Please contact info@acrosstheages.org if you would like to join us.

SEPTEMBER SPECIAL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events. Here are our special events for September:

Wednesday, September 2nd, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – “Storytellers’ Society” at ParklandsThese monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Thursday, September 24th, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration at ParklandsHelp us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in September. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!
