Nursing Home News--March 2014

This is the March 2014 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

SPRING FESTIVAL (March 30th-April 6th)

Our annual Spring Festival is coming up very soon! The festival will be held the week of March 30th-April 6th, with events at the various nursing homes we serve throughout the week. We will conclude the festival with our annual Spring Volunteer Appreciation Party on Sunday, April 6th from 2-4pm. The party is always a special time, held in the beautiful courtyard at Barr Systems with food, music, and special recognitions for volunteers. All members and supporters of Friends, plus family, friends, and anyone else who is interested are welcome and encouraged to attend this celebration, which is our biggest event of the year. All are welcome at any of the events of the Spring Festival as well.

Watch a special email from us very soon with dates and details for all of the events, and we will also be posting a flyer on our website soon. Contact if you have any questions.

Our heartfelt thanks to each of the speakers who shared their stories at our Speaker Series presentation last month, entitled “Stories from Friends Across the Ages.” Each of the volunteers who participated shared stories about the residents they visited, and what they had learned from the experience of volunteering and becoming friends with these special people. The members of the speaker panel were:

·         Agnes Bierbaum: volunteer at Parklands for the past 13 years

·         Andrew Mitchell: with his wife Kim has been volunteering at Signature Health Care for the past 6 years

·         Erin Hawkins: volunteered at Gainesville Health Care Center for four years while a student at UF, and now for another year since returning to Gainesville

·         Heather Geidel: also volunteered throughout her time as a student at UF (5 years) at both Park Meadows and GHCC, and now is an OT at Signature Health Care

·         Jon Shinn: volunteered at NFRSC for 4 years

·         Amanda Novatnack: volunteer at Park Meadows for the past year

Look for highlights from their stories in our next issue of our snail mail letter, The Bridge, due out next month, and watch for our next speaker series presentation in the fall… you won’t want to miss it!

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you. If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well. Here are our special events for March:

Wednesday, March 5th, 10:00 – 11:00 AM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands – These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Wednesday, March 19th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – Casino Time at Parklands – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, March 27th, 2:30 - 3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in March. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

March 30-April 6th—Spring Festival—watch for more details soon!

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:
