Nursing Home News -- February 2007

Friends board member Gretchen Grigsby has developed a new program based on a “Drumming Circle” and she is testing the program out at Palm Garden nursing home.  The program allows residents to play the drums and express themselves musically.  Six residents will be participating in the program each Sunday at 2:30PM, for the next five Sundays.  After this is over, Gretchen is hoping to have a better idea of how well the program works, with the hopes of trying the program at other nursing homes too.  If you’d like to observe or be involved in some way, feel free to contact us or stop by Palm Garden some Sunday and be part of the action.  All the drums have already been purchased but you would be welcome to contact us if you have some other percussion instruments you’d like to bring or donate to the group.

Every Sunday at 2:30 – Drumming Circle at Palm Garden – See Above!

Monday, February 12th, 2:30PM – 4PM – “Casino Party” – This event is such a big hit with the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab (formerly The Manor at Gainesville) that we’ve started having it regularly.  At 2:30 there will be a bingo game.  Once we’re finished with Bingo, we move on to the horse racing game, and blackjack or other card games.  The residents will be playing for “Bingo Bucks” and prizes.

Tuesday, February 13th, 11:30 – 1PM – Chili Cook-Off – Friends Across the Ages will be participating in this event held at Haven Hospice on 39th Ave.  Last year over 30 Chili recipes were entered and winners were chosen in various categories.  Tickets are $5 at the door and you get all the chili you can eat!  It’s a great lunch so bring your friends and coworkers.  Proceeds go to SPICE (Special Projects Interagency Council for the Elderly).  Thanks goes to Jon and Keri Shinn for making the official Friends chili, which will be entered in the “Healthy/Vegetarian” category (just remember to vote for them).

Thursday, February 22nd, 3-4PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in February. Meet us in the dining room where we'll have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.

Sunday, February 25th, 2-3PM – Singing at Woodlands! – We haven’t been out to Woodlands Care Center in a while.  Meet us in the front lobby or just outside the front doors, and we’ll head down to the dining room together.  Just bring yourself, your voice, or any instrument you’d like to play.  We sing a mixture of old church songs and folk songs.  Everyone is welcome to come along and help sing (words to all songs will be provided) and no talent required, any voice will do.  You’re welcome to RSVP (by replying to this email), so we’ll know to be looking for you.
