Nursing Home News--July 2013

This is the July 2013 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

Summer is usually a slow time for us as far as bringing in new volunteers, but this summer has been an exception, thanks in part to the article that appeared about Friends Across the Ages in the Gainesville Sun last month ( We are very pleased to welcome a number of new volunteers who have joined us so far this summer. We are grateful to have you with us!

We could still use new volunteers in most of our one-to-one visitation groups, particularly our Palm Garden group, which meets Mondays at 10:30am. If you or someone you know is interested, please spread the word! For more information, contact

Speaking of new volunteers, one of our new volunteers is trying to help Park Meadows (one of the facilities we serve) get a piano. Having a piano in the facility is helpful both for those who might come in to entertain residents, and also for the residents themselves. It can be a special help to residents who have dementia, who may respond to music in a way that they do not respond to other stimuli. This volunteer is hoping to find an organization that might be able to donate a piano, or something along those lines. If you have any information which would be helpful for this, please contact

Thursday, July 11th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – “Storytellers’ Society” at ParklandsThese monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Thursday, July 18th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – Casino Time at Parklands A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, July 25th, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in June. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:

Events are open to everyone (children are welcome at most events, please inquire). Please contact us and let us know if you plan to attend one of these events so that our coordinators can be on the lookout for you. Please call (352) 381-1117 or email
