Nursing Home News--June 2013

This is the March 2012 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

GAINESVILLE SUN ARTICLE—AND THANK YOU TO OUR COORDINATORS

An article about Friends Across the Ages appeared on the front page of today’s Gainesville Sun. Here is the link in case you did not see it already: http://www.gainesville.com/article/20130602/ARTICLES/130609964?tc=cr&tc=ar

We are so glad the article highlights the work of Kim and Andrew Mitchell, who coordinate our group out at Signature Health Care, and also serve on our board of directors (Andrew is our current board president). It also mentions longtime Signature volunteer (and board vice president) Heather Beck, who is moving to Atlanta soon—we will miss you, Heather!

We appreciate the work of all of our volunteer coordinators, without whom the work we do would not be possible. We would like to take this opportunity to name and thank them all:

Morgan Witter—Park Meadows

Carolyn Lukert—Palm Garden

Kim and Andrew Mitchell—Signature Health Care

Steve Blay—Parklands

Holly Mann—Gainesville Health Care Center

Holly Mann is also moving away soon, so we especially want to thank her for the work she has done over the past year to keep the GHCC group going. We will miss her, and wish her well as she moves to Kentucky with her husband!

PALM GARDEN RESIDENTS AND VOLUNTEERS RECOGNIZED FOR BABY BLANKET PROJECT

As we reported in our last edition of our snail mail newsletter, The Bridge, volunteers Carolyn Lukert and Colby Lowe, together with their Palm Garden friends Marie and Dolores, recently made tie blankets and donated them to the Shands Pediatric Center. This group loves to do projects that help people in need. For the past couple of years, they worked with coordinator Dianne Walsh to create holiday goody bags for clients of the Helping Hands Clinic. Because it felt so good to do something good for others, both Marie and Dolores expressed an interest in doing another service project. Carolyn suggested the blankets because they require no sewing – just tying knots! And we all are very able to do that. So, they worked side by side for three weeks and made some amazing creations.

Recently, Shands HealthCare sent them a thank you note for the blankets—here is some of what the note said: “We gratefully acknowledge your contribution of 2 handmade blankets by residents at Palm Garden that we received on 5/1/2013. It is because of the community’s philanthropic efforts, and specifically people like you, that we are able to fund pediatric research…Thank you again for your gracious support, and for helping us to positively change the lives of so many children and their families.”

We appreciate the work this group does to reach out to others!
