Nursing Home News -- August 2007

WELCOME BACK!

Most of you that left town for the summer will be arriving back shortly.  Welcome Back!  We want you to know (for you one-to-one volunteers) that all our groups are still meeting at the same time at each nursing home.  So, for example, if you were visiting University Place on Tuesdays at 7PM, or Gainesville Health Care Center on Sundays at 3:30PM, just come on back – same time, same place – and we’ll be there.  We’ll even have a little kick-off Bingo game at Park Meadows to kick-start that (small but dedicated) group.

One thing you may notice is that most of the nursing homes have new Activity Directors as of recently.  Please welcome Sherice at Gainesville Health Care Center, Christina at North Florida Rehab, Marcia-Lynn at Parklands, and Tiffany at University Place.  Also, Stephanus has returned to Park Meadows after a brief hiatus.  If you see any of them, please introduce yourself and tell them about Friends Across the Ages!

NURSING HOME UPCOMING EVENTS

Monday, August 13th, 2:30 – 4PM -- Casino Time! – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab -- At 2:30 there will be a bingo game.  Once we are finished with Bingo, we really up the stakes and move on to Blackjack!  The residents will be playing for “Bingo Bucks” and prizes.

Friday, August 17th, 12 noon – Activity Directors meeting – Some Friends board members and Activity Directors from around the area (including some from Ocala) will be taking part in a lunch meeting at North Florida Rehab this day.  The purpose of the meeting will be to get to know each other better, and share some ideas.  And with so many new Activity Directors, there couldn’t be a better time.  A special thanks to North Florida Rehab for providing the conference room and the lunch!  RSVPs are required so we can plan accordingly.

Saturday, August 25th – 10AM – Doughnuts and Bingo – The name says it all.  Doughnuts.  Bingo.  Can you think of a better combination?  I rest my case.  This event will be held at Park Meadows.  We also hope to have some Bingo prizes for the residents.  There will be plenty of doughnuts for everybody (volunteers included).  Did I mention the doughnuts?  Be there.

Thursday, August 30th, 3-4PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in August. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  A big thanks goes to Erin Hawkins for bringing balloons to July’s party!  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Friday, August 31st -- United Way “Day of Caring”   The United Way is organizing a “Day of Caring” which will rally over 200 volunteers who desire to make a difference in the lives of people in our community.  These volunteers will be giving their day to participate in a wide range of community projects.  This is our 3rd year participating in this event, and the volunteers (who come from Shands) will be teaming up with Friends volunteers to organize an event or outing (last year we took some residents up to Guthrie’s Fried Chicken).  Email us for more information!
