Nursing Home News--April 2017

This is the April 2017 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

All this past week we have been celebrating spring with the residents of the nursing homes we serve. We kicked off our Spring Festival last Sunday, with a rousing rendition of karaoke at Park Meadows. (You should see the pictures of the whole group singing “YMCA.”) Monday was Bingo and Trivia at Terrace Health and Rehab, with questions ranging from past presidents to what actress played Mary in the classic movie It’s a Wonderful Life. (Do you know? No fair googling it!) Next was our annual “Spring Break in Las Vegas” casino party at Parklands, with four different games for residents to choose: poker, blackjack, craps, and roulette. (This is always Steve’s favorite event of the year.) Thursday was two different events. First, Keri and Jon Shinn led the annual Spring Arts N’ Crafts event at NFRSC where residents decorate potted plants for their rooms, with the help of an energetic home school group. Then in the afternoon, we hosted our usual Luau Bingo Party at GHCC, this time with the help of a group of volunteers from St. Augustine Church. Finally on Saturday, our crew of volunteers at Signature Health Care put together a spring hat decorating event. This was a new event, and was such a hit, the residents and volunteers alike have declared we will need to do it again sometime.

The festival culminates today with our annual Spring Volunteer Appreciate Party on Sunday, April 2nd from 1:00-3:00 PM in the beautiful courtyard at Barr Systems. We would like to thank all of our volunteers (old and new) for their dedication and service at this, our biggest event of the year! Family and friends are welcome to join us for an afternoon of food, music, ice cream, and special recognitions for volunteers in the beautiful courtyard at Barr Systems. We will have something for all of our volunteers so please come if you can! Please contact for more information or to RSVP.

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you. If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well. Here are our special events for April:
