Nursing Home news--October 2013

This is the October 2013 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

SAVE THE DATE FOR NOVEMBER SPEAKER SERIES

Mark your calendars now! Dr. Vi Asmuth is returning next month for the November session of our Speaker Series. She will offer a presentation entitled “Attitudes about Aging and Interpersonal Communication.” Vi was a weekly visitor/volunteer with Friends Across the Ages for almost eight years, and also served as coordinator for a group of Friends volunteers for much of that time. She received her doctorate in communication with an emphasis on communication and aging—so she really is an expert on this topic!

This presentation will be on Tuesday, November 19th from 6-7:30 at the Tower Road Library Meeting Room. It is FREE and open to the public. Please contact info@acrosstheages.org for more information.

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS AT THE NURSING HOMES

Our friends at Park Meadows have let us know that they are hosting a Fall Festival for their residents—on Halloween, Thursday, October 31 at 2:30pm. If you are interested in helping out with this, contact us at and we will put you in touch with them to find out more. Also, many of the other nursing homes have celebrations for Halloween as well. If you are a regular volunteer at one of the nursing homes, you may want to consider checking out their calendar and attending if you can. If you are not a regular volunteer but are looking for a fun way to start, this might be your opportunity. Contact us at info@acrosstheages.org and we will help you get the information you need to join in the spooky fun!

OCTOBER SPECIAL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events. Here are our special events for October:

Thursday, October 10th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands – These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Thursday, October 17th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – Casino Time at Parklands – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, October 24th, 2:30-3:30 PM – Birthday celebration – Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in October. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!
