Nursing Home News--August 2012

This is the March 2012 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

On Sunday, July 15th, Friends Across the Ages hosted an “I Feel Pretty” Party for the residents of Signature Health Care. We held this event to honor the memory of our friend and mentor, Ruth Hazen, who passed away in February. Ruth volunteered for more than 25 years doing manicures for residents at that facility because, as she put it, “Everyone deserves to feel pretty.” The festivities included afternoon hors d’oeuvres, manicures, photography by Friends member and professional photographer Donna Mitchell, door prizes such as body wash, cologne, mirrors etc., and also things for the residents to wear like scarves, hats, and earrings. All in all, it seemed like everyone present really enjoyed themselves. Special thanks to the volunteers who made this event possible! We feel that Ruth was probably smiling down on us all that day.

It’s hard to believe but the summer break is already almost over! Many of our volunteers are college students who go home for the summer, and many of our other volunteers have been out of town for summer travel. If you have been away, we welcome you back as you return to good old Gainesville. Let us know if you need any assistance as you get back in the swing of things with volunteering. If you are not one of our regular volunteers but have been looking for a chance to get started, what better time than the beginning of a new school year? Just contact us at and we can help point you in the right direction.

Speaking of travel, due to trips and other obligations during the month of August, most of the usual events at Parklands are TBA—contact for more information. Only one event for the month is set:

Thursday, August 30th, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in August. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

**Note: Although our board and coordinators will be having a special August meeting, there is no general Friends Across the Ages membership meeting in August. We will resume our membership meetings in September with the return of our speaker/workshop series. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 11th—we will have a special session that day about service as a response to 9/11. Watch for more details in our September Nursing Home News.

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:

Events are open to everyone (children are welcome at most events, please inquire). Please contact us and let us know if you plan to attend one of these events so that our coordinators can be on the lookout for you. Please call (352) 381-1117 or email
