Nursing Home News--January 2017

This is the January 2017 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages Nursing Home Volunteer Network

We would like to wish a Happy New Year to all our volunteers and supporters! We are excited to jump into another year of “bridging generations with ageless friendship” as we say in our motto. This month marks the 18th birthday of Friends Across the Ages. So we guess you could say our organization is all grown up now!

We are so grateful to all who have responded so generously to our Annual Appeal which was sent out last month. Supporters like you are what make it possible for us to continue to do what we do—thank you so much!

We have some good news and bad news about our current financial status entering the new year. The good news is that we received a grant of $2000 from Weyerhaeuser, a forestry/timber company with offices in Florida.
This will help a lot, as our bank account had been getting rather low towards the end of the year. The bad news, however, is that the response to our annual appeal has been much lower than in past years, at least so far. We would still appreciate any further support to make our budget for this year. Donations can be made online by following this link: Or, checks can be sent to Friends Across the Ages, P.O. Box 14698, Gainesville, FL, 32604. All donations are tax-deductible.

Thank you again for continuing to believe in and support this organization!

This past month was a time of many celebrations and caroling events with our volunteers and residents. We held holiday celebrations of various kinds at North Florida Rehab, Terrace Health and Rehab, Signature Health Care, and Parklands Nursing and Rehab. Thank you to all who were able to join us!

Now that the holidays are over, many of our volunteers who have been traveling are returning, and we would like to wish them all a very warm welcome back! We’re grateful to begin a new year of volunteering with you. Also, this is the time of year when we begin to receive a number of new applications, and we would like to wish all of our brand new volunteers a very warm welcome! We’re glad that you decided to start your year off with a new volunteer endeavor, and we hope you enjoy meeting new friends at the nursing homes here in Gainesville. For anyone who has been considering volunteering but has not yet applied, there is no better time! Contact us at for more information.

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes.  These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you.  If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well.  Here are our special events for January:

Wednesday, January 4th,  10:30 – 11:30 AM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands –These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Wednesday, January 11th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – Casino Time at Parklands – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab  Come help play poker with the residents, or just help cheer them on! No real money is involved.

Thursday, January 26th, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in January. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:

Events are open to everyone (children are welcome at most events, please inquire). Please contact us at and let us know if you plan to attend one of these events so that our coordinators can be on the lookout for you.
