Nursing Home News--October 2014

This is the October 2014 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

FALL SPEAKER SERIES PRESENTATION:

“WHAT IS HOSPICE CARE AND HOW CAN I HELP”

presented by Patricia Krogh and Courtney Quirie of Haven Hospice

Wednesday, October 1st, 6:00 – 7:00 PM

Haven Hospice E.T. York Care Center

4200 NW 90th Blvd, Gainesville

Free and Open to the Public

For our Fall edition of the Friends Across the Ages Speaker Series, Haven Hospice will be offering a two-part presentation for us. The first part, presented by Public Relations Manager Patricia Krogh, will help to dispel some myths about Hospice care and services—what it is and isn’t. The second part, presented by Director of Volunteer Services Courtney Quirie, will be a brief talk about volunteering with patients at the end of life. We will then have time for questions and answers.

We strongly encourage all of our volunteers, friends, and supporters to attend. Did you know that many nursing home residents receive Hospice care? This will be a wonderful learning opportunity, helpful for nursing home volunteers and anyone who interacts with people near the end of their lives—family members, friends, and others.

This Speaker Series presentation will be held Wednesday, October 1 from 6:00 – 7:00 PM in the meeting room at Haven Hospice E.T. York Care Center, 4200 NW 90th Boulevard, Gainesville Florida 32606. It is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Refreshments will be provided. Contact us at info@acrosstheages.org or (352) 381-1117 for more information or to RSVP.

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS AT THE NURSING HOMES

Most of the nursing homes have some kind of celebration for Halloween. We don’t have any details from the various facilities yet, but should, soon. If you are interested in celebrating Halloween with our friends at one of the local nursing homes, contact us at info@acrosstheages.org and we will help you get the information you need to join in the spooky fun!

OCTOBER SPECIAL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events. Here are our special events for October:

Wednesday, October 8th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands – These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Wednesday, October 15th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – Casino Time at Parklands – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, October 30th, 2:30-3:30 PM – Birthday celebration – Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in October. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!
