Nursing Home News--October 2015

This is the October 2015 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

“WELCOME BABY” PARTY

We are planning a special celebration for the newest little “Friend Across the Ages.” Our friends Kim and Andrew Mitchell, who are such an important part of our Friends Across the Ages family, are expecting their first child in November, a little boy. We realized most nursing home residents seldom have the chance to attend a baby shower or celebration, so we thought this would be a neat opportunity for them as well as for all of us. The party will take place Sunday, October 25th

at 2:00pm at Signature Health Care. We will do some of the same things we do at our “tea parties” which are so popular with the residents—wear funny hats, have special finger foods, punch, etc. Anyone who would like to join us is welcome! No need to bring a gift—perhaps just your best advice or funny stories about babies in your life. For more information or to RSVP, contact info@acrosstheages.org.

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS AT THE NURSING HOMES

We will be hosting a special “Spooky Halloween Birthday Party” in place of our regular birthday celebration at Parklands on Thursday, October 29th at 2:30pm. Many of the other nursing homes we serve have celebrations for Halloween coming up at the end of this month. If you are a regular volunteer at one of the nursing homes, you may want to consider checking out their calendar and attending if you can. If you are not a regular volunteer but are looking for a fun way to start, this might be your opportunity. Contact us at info@acrosstheages.org and we will help you get the information you need to join in the spooky fun!

OCTOBER SPECIAL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events. Here are our special events for October:

Wednesday, October 7th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – Special Viewing of Davy Crockett with the “Storyteller Society” at Parklands – Our Storyteller Society at Parklands Nursing and Rehab recently finished reading The Adventures of Davy Crockett together, and now would like to watch the movie! We will begin gathering between 10 and 10:30, and will start the movie promptly at 10:30. It takes about an hour, so we will finish just in time for the residents to get to their lunch.

Wednesday, October 14th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – Casino Time at Parklands – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help play poker with the residents, or just help cheer them on! No real money is involved; residents play for the honor of having our Championship Trophy for the month. J

Sunday, October 25th, 2:00-3:30 PM – “Welcome Baby” Party at Signature – This is a special celebration to be held at Signature Health Care for our newest little “Friend Across the Ages”—Kim and Andrew Mitchell’s little boy, who is due in November. See article above for details, and contact us at info@acrosstheages.org for more information or to RSVP.

Thursday, October 29th, 2:30-3:30 PM – “Spooky Halloween Birthday Celebration” at Parklands – As mentioned above, in place of our usual monthly birthday celebration at Parklands, we will be planning a combined Halloween and Birthday Party. We will wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in October, and will dress in Halloween costumes, share Halloween treats, and sing a few spooky songs, as well as “Happy Birthday” of course. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!
