“Attitudes about Aging and Interpersonal Communication”

presented by M. Violet Asmuth, Ph.D.

Tuesday, November 19th, 6-7:30 PM

Tower Road Library Meeting Room

FREE and Open to the Public

Do you want to enhance your relationships with older adults? The first step is understanding our own personal attitudes and stereotypes toward aging. The next step is to examine methods of improving interpersonal communication between generations. Attend this workshop and learn to be a better communicator.

Dr. Vi Asmuth was a weekly visitor/volunteer with Friends Across the Ages for almost eight years, and also served as coordinator for a group of Friends volunteers for much of that time. She received her doctorate in communication with an emphasis on communication and aging, and teaches courses in communication at the University of Florida.

This presentation will be on Tuesday, November 19th from 6-7:30 at the Tower Road Library Meeting Room (3020 S.W. 75th St., 32608). It is FREE and open to the public. Please contact for more information.

Mark your calendars now for the annual Friends Across the Ages Holiday Party!  It will be held Sunday, December 8th from 2:00-4:00pm at North Florida Rehab and Specialty Care Center.  This annual event has become a long standing tradition with our organization.  We start with some caroling with the residents of NFRSC in the dining room, then proceed to the conference room for holiday treats, volunteer recognitions, and holiday visiting time with one another.  All volunteers, supporters, friends and family are welcome.

Our Signature Health Care volunteer group brought some Halloween cheer to the residents they visit earlier this week. Check out some of the pictures on our facebook page: Signature Halloween Pictures

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events. Here are our special events for November:

Thursday, November 7th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands – These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Thursday, November 14th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – Casino Time at Parklands – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Tuesday, November 19th, 6-7:30 PM –November Speaker Series Presentation: “Attitudes about Aging and Interpersonal Communication—See above article for details, and please help spread the word about this event, which will be held at the Tower Road Library Meeting Room, and is FREE and open to the public!

Thursday, November 21st, 2:30-3:30 PM – Birthday celebration – Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in October. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:

Events are open to everyone (children are welcome at most events, please inquire). Please contact us at and let us know if you plan to attend one of these events so that our coordinators can be on the lookout for you.
