“STRENGTHENING  RELATIONSHIPS WITH THOSE IN YOUR LIFE WHO ARE LIVING WITH MEMORY LOSS”

Presented by Carolyn Lukert—Tuesday, January 15, 2012, 6-7:30pm at Barr Systems

Free and Open to the Public

Chances are you currently know someone who lives with one of the many forms of dementia, and if you don't, you likely will in your lifetime.  Please come to this presentation, where you will learn how important it is to remain connected.  We will lay a foundation to help all in attendance view dementia from a different perspective - one that doesn't see it as a death sentence, or a "long goodbye," but as a shift in the way a person experiences the world.  We will begin the conversation about how we as a community, and individually, can help to reduce the stigma that currently exists with a dementia-related illness, and how the power of effective relationships can influence the progression of the symptoms.  We will also share the best resources to help everyone in the audience begin (or continue) the education process on a topic that will impact all of us.

This presentation by Carolyn Lukert is part of the ongoing Friends Across the Ages “Speaker/Workshop Series.”  Carolyn kicked off the series last year, and we all enjoyed her presentation so much we asked her to start our year off right again this year.  Carolyn is a long time nursing home volunteer, and a member of the Friends board of directors.    She has recently started her own non-profit, the Center for Dementia Education, whose goal is to help foster dementia-friendly communities that support the highest possible functionality, independence and quality of life for people living with memory loss and other symptoms.

This meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 15th from 6-7:30pm at Barr Systems, located at 4500 NW 27th Avenue, Gainesville.  Directions can be found at www.acrosstheages.org/directions.asp under the heading “Friends Across the Ages Office.”  Contact info@acrosstheages.org, or (352) 381-1117 for more information.  We look forward to seeing you there!

VOLUNTEERING IN THE NEW YEAR

The beginning of a new year is a great time to start something new, or return to things that were once part of your life.  Perhaps you or someone you know has long been interested in visiting with people at nursing homes but never taken the steps to get involved.  Perhaps you used to volunteer but stopped due to other life activities crowding in.  Whatever the case, if you would like to know more about how to get started, simply contact info@acrosstheages.org and we’d be glad to help point you in the right direction.  Maybe you will make a new friend this year at the nursing home, and make a difference both in the life of the resident and in your own life as well.

JANUARY SPECIAL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes.  These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you.  If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well.  Here are our special events for January:

Thursday, January 10th,  1:30 – 2:30PM – “Storytellers’ Society” at ParklandsThese monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Thursday, January 17th,  1:30 – 2:30PM – Casino Time at ParklandsA monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, January 24th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – Wii Games at Parklands A former volunteer has donated a Nintendo Wii for the nursing home residents to use.  We have tried it a couple of times with the residents at Parklands and it was a huge hit—so we have added Wii Games to our list of monthly activities at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.  Come on out and join the fun!

Thursday, January 31st, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in January. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!
