Nursing Home News--July 2011

This is the October 2007 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

FRIENDS ACROSS THE AGES VOLUNTEERS AT PALM GARDEN RECOGNIZED

Nearly seven years ago—in September of 2004—Dianne Walsh and Gretchen Grigsby began volunteering with Friends Across the Ages at Palm Garden nursing home here in Gainesville.  Not long after that, they began a visitation group for Friends Across the Ages volunteers at Palm Garden.  The volunteers would spend time visiting individual residents, and follow up with a gathering for residents and volunteers with coffee and sweets.   The group still meets weekly, all these years later.  The volunteers in this group were recognized for their efforts at a recent Volunteer Appreciation luncheon put on by the staff at Palm Garden.  There were certificates and flowers for all.  We are glad they have been recognized for the wonderful work they do—they deserve it!

THANK YOU, KEO

In our last issue of The Bridge (our snail mail newsletter), we introduced you to our new administrative coordinator, Keo Fox.  Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Keo needed to resign a couple of weeks ago.  We are sorry to see her go so soon, but thank her for her enthusiastic efforts on behalf of Friends Across the Ages during her time with us.  We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

We have not hired a replacement, so for now Allison Blay is filling in.  She can be reached at allison.blay@acrosstheages.org or (352) 381-1117.

JULY SPECIAL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes.  These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you.  If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well.  Here are our special events for July:

Thursday, July 21st,  1:30 – 2:30PM – Casino Time at Parklands – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, July 28th, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in July. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!
