Nursing Home News--July 2012

This is the March 2012 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

On Sunday, July 15 at 3pm, we will be hosting what we are calling an “I Feel Pretty” Party for the residents of Signature Health Care. We are doing this event to honor the memory of our friend and mentor, Ruth Hazen, who passed away in February. Ruth volunteered for more than 25 years doing manicures for residents at that facility because, as she put it, “Everyone deserves to feel pretty.” The details are still being finalized, but we will definitely have a few folks doing manicures for the residents—and maybe some other pampering as well—plus food, music, and decorations. The idea is to help the residents feel pretty and special as Ruth would want them to. If you or someone you know would be interested in helping out with this event, please contact us asap at Also, if you have any scarves, hats, hair things, necklaces, etc. that you would like to donate for the residents to use for this event and keep, let us know that as well.

As we have mentioned before, the other project we are planning this summer is a Friends Across the Ages book, which we will dedicate to Ruth. This is an idea we have had floating around for a long time—something that would gather together some of the stories from our volunteers and residents from over the years, as well as tips and wisdom that those interested in nursing home volunteerism might find helpful. We welcome contributions for this book—but time is running out if you would like to submit something! So, to all of our volunteers and supporters—if you have a story you would like to share, a poem, some nuggets of wisdom, a picture, some artwork, anything along those lines, please consider sending it in to us asap! Contact Allison at for more information.
