SUMMER PLANS for Friends
Calling all Social
Networking junkies – tired of wasting your time with nothing productive to do
on MySpace
and FaceBook
(except looking at everybody’s 1000s of digital pictures from their latest
birthday party)? Well soon you may be
able to interact with other Friends volunteers
online and share your thoughts about nursing home volunteering with all of us. We are looking for advice right now on what
features you’d like in such an online community, so if you have any opinions,
let us know. It should give our
volunteers a chance to get to know each other better, since we visit so many
different nursing homes and different times.
We will be attending
the Florida Health Care Activity
Coordinators Association Conference in Orlando from July 5th – 7th. This promises to be a great opportunity to
network with Activity Professionals from around the state. With copies of the Friends Across the Ages “Starter Manual” in hand, we hope to spread
the word about our program in the hopes of inspiring others to apply some of it
elsewhere in Florida.
UPCOMING GROUP EVENTS
Sorry this
newsletter is a little late… we were waiting for the dates to be set on a
couple other events that never quite materialized… hopefully we’ll have those
events in July.
Monday, June 11th, 2:30 – 4PM -- Casino Time! – A monthly event
at Parklands Nursing and Rehab -- At
2:30 there will be a bingo game. Once
we’re finished with Bingo, we move on to the horse racing game, and blackjack
or other card games. The residents will
be playing for “Bingo Bucks” and prizes.
Wednesday, June 13th ,
2:30 – 4PM – Talent
Show! – Join us at Parklands Nursing and Rehab for a Talent Show. The nursing home staff and volunteers will be
performing for the residents, who will judge the winner. If you have a talent, reply to this email and
let us know, and you can be part of the talent show. Steve (me)
and Seless (on staff @ Parklands) will be performing Kenny
Rogers songs – how can you miss that?
Wednesday, June 20th and Monday June 25th,
2PM – Bingo w/ Division
of Blind Services – We will be
having a very special event these 2 days.
Children from the Division of
Blind Services Summer Program will be coming out to the nursing home to
help out with a Bingo game. Some of
these kids have limited vision themselves, so there will be a lot of teamwork
required between the residents and volunteers.
They will also be bringing snacks for the residents, and Friends Across the
Ages will be supplying some prizes. Our
thanks goes to our neighbor Susie Breier for
suggesting and help with coordinating this event.
Thursday, June 28th, 3-4PM
-- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents
of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with
birthdays in June. Meet us in the dining room where we'll have singing and
cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the
cake, sing, clean up, etc. Do you play an instrument or have some other
talent (clowns, mimes, juggling, spin a basketball on your nose, etc)? We are always looking for new entertainment
for the party – let us know!
