Nursing Home News--May 2012

This is the March 2012 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

This year’s annual Friends Across the Ages Spring Festival, held April 7-14, included a wide range of events at six different nursing homes, and from everything we heard, residents and volunteers alike had a wonderful time at all of the festivities. We want to thank all who attended these events, and especially the people who coordinated them and made this festival possible:

Kim and Andrew Mitchell—Spring Scrimmage game watching party at Signature

Gretchen Grigsby and Dianne Walsh—Sing-a-long at Palm Garden

Steve Blay—“Spring Break in Las Vegas” at Parklands

Anna Kim and Holly Mann—Luau and Bingo at Gainesville Health Care

Vi Asmuth—“Reaction Reading” at Park Meadows

Keri and Jon Shinn—Spring Arts and crafts at NFRSC

We also want to thank all who attended the Spring Volunteer Appreciation party which wrapped up the festival, and wanted to mention those who were especially recognized at that event:

Christine Hall—“Stick-to-it” Award

Joie Hill—Spirit Award

David Hornilla—Dedication Award

Rachel MontealegreSpirit Award

Robbie Curry—Five-year Award

George Hamilton—Ten-year Award (for service on the board)

Thank you to all of our amazingly dedicated and caring volunteers for all you do throughout the year!

At our Spring party we announced two things we are planning to do in memory of our late friend and mentor, Ruth Hazen, who passed away in February. One is an “I Feel Pretty” event. Ruth volunteered for something like 25 or more years at what is now Signature Health Care, doing manicures for the residents each week because, as she put it, “Everyone deserves to feel pretty.” We want to do an event with the residents that involves manicures, hair, and/or anything else that helps them feel pretty as Ruth would want them to. We had hoped to schedule that event for this month, but were not able to pull together the details in time, so now we are aiming for sometime this summer. Stay tuned for further details in our June edition of the Nursing Home News!

The other project we are planning is a Friends Across the Ages book, which we will dedicate to Ruth. This book is an idea we have had floating around for a long time—something that would gather together some of the stories from our volunteers and residents from over the years, as well as tips and wisdom that those interested in nursing home volunteerism might find helpful. We welcome contributions for this book. So, to all of our volunteers and supporters—if you have a story you would like to share, a poem, some nuggets of wisdom, a picture, some artwork, anything along those lines, please consider sending it in to us! We will be compiling everything over the summer and hope to have it ready sometime in the fall. Contact Allison at for more information.

Thursday, May 10th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – “Storytellers’ Society” at ParklandsThese monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Thursday, May 10th, 6:00-7:30PM—Friends Across the Ages May Membership Meeting – All are welcome to come and connect with other volunteers and supporters. This meeting will also serve as our Friends board meeting for this quarter. We will be talking about plans for summer and fall, so please join us if you can! Contact for more information. **Please note the change of date—rescheduled from Tuesday May 8th**

Thursday, May 24th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – Casino Time at ParklandsA monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, May 31st, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in May. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:

Events are open to everyone (children are welcome at most events, please inquire). Please contact us and let us know if you plan to attend one of these events so that our coordinators can be on the lookout for you. Please call (352) 381-1117 or email
