Nursing Home News--January 2012

This is the September 2011 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

Presented by Carolyn Lukert—Tuesday, January 10, 2012, 6pm at Barr Systems

Free and Open to the Public

Starting this month, Friends Across the Ages will hold optional membership meetings most months as a chance to connect with other members. Four times a year, a speaker/workshop series will be offered during the membership meetings with presentations and opportunities for discussion about various topics of interest to nursing home volunteers.

For our first meeting, Friends board member Carolyn Lukert will discuss how to make your visits as effective and meaningful as possible. She will cover how to break the ice, and how to determine the level at which your resident is capable and interested in interacting. She will share several strategies for working with residents who have dementia, and also with those who don't.

Carolyn is a long time nursing home volunteer. She currently works with professional caregivers to assist people living in assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, as well as in their homes. She is involved in the family care for her father, who is experiencing dementia. Carolyn has a passion for working with the elderly population and helping them to live their best lives, regardless of where they live.

This meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 10th at 6pm at Barr Systems, located at 4500 NW 27th Avenue, Gainesville. Directions can be found at under the heading “Friends Across the Ages Office.” Contact, or (352) 381-1117 for more information.

Look forward to an enjoyable evening of learning and fellowship with people who are passionate about connecting as Friends Across the Ages!

As described in our most recent edition of our snail mail newsletter, The Bridge, we are making some changes in the way we do things with Friends Across the Ages and the way we see ourselves as an organization. If you missed that edition, you can find it on our website, here:

If you are already a volunteer with us, then you are already officially a “member” of our network. If you are not already volunteering with us, but would like to become a member, please let us know! You do not have to be a volunteer and you do not need to live in Gainesville. Anyone who is interested in supporting nursing home volunteerism, and interested in being part of the community that is Friends Across the Ages can join. Contact Allison at for more information.

Note: our website still reflects our old system, but we are in the process of updating it—stay tuned!

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you. If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well. Here are our special events for January:

Thursday, January 5th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands – These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Thursday, January 19th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – Casino Time at Parklands – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, January 26th, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in January. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:

Events are open to everyone (children are welcome at most events, please inquire). Please contact us and let us know if you plan to attend one of these events so that our coordinators can be on the lookout for you. Please call (352) 381-1117 or email
