Nursing Home News--July 2016

This is the July 2016 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

Back by popular demand, Friends Across the Ages is hosting another “Trivia Across the Ages” event at North Florida Rehab and Specialty Care on Saturday, July 16th at 2:30pm. We will have trivia questions from each decade from the 1950’s through the 1990’s, and a few from the 21st century as well. Prizes will be awarded to winning residents and refreshments will be shared by all.

This event is a great opportunity for those who have been interested in volunteering at a nursing home and want to get their feet wet. It is also a nice chance for our regular volunteers to come check out another facility and perhaps meet some volunteers that you don’t normally see. Please contact us at for more information or to RSVP.

To all our current and past volunteers—do you have a story you would like to share with us about your experiences volunteering, or a story you remember your “friend across the ages” sharing with you from their past? Would you be interested in writing it down and sending it to us? Or do you have a favorite picture of your resident friends?

This summer, we are beginning the process of collecting stories and pictures for a project we have long dreamed about and finally hope to make a reality: a Friends Across the Ages book. Our hope is that it will include stories from volunteers and residents over the years. Perhaps it will inspire others to volunteer. Perhaps it will teach them something. Perhaps it will make them smile. We welcome funny stories and sad ones, inspiring stories and challenging ones…and even just plain silly stories. For more information, contact us at

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you. If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well. Here are our special events for July:

Wednesday, July 13th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – “Storytellers’ Society” at ParklandsOur wonderful volunteer, John Hobbs, has been bringing some fun books to share with the residents. We read a few chapters at each session, and pause from time to time to share any memories, stories, or comments the book might trigger. It’s a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Saturday, July 16th, 2:30-3:30 PM – “Trivia Across the Ages” at NFRSC See the article above for details, and join us at NFRSC if you can! Please RSVP to if you think you’ll be able to make it.

Wednesday, July 20th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – “Poker Party” at Parklands A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab Come help play poker with the residents, or just help cheer them on! No real money is involved; residents play for the honor of having our Championship Trophy for the month.

Thursday, July 23rd, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday Celebration at Parklands Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in July. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:

Events are open to everyone (children are welcome at most events, please inquire). Please contact us at and let us know if you plan to attend one of these events so that our coordinators can be on the lookout for you.
