SPEAKER/WORKSHOP SERIES: SEPTEMBER SUCCESS and NOVEMBER NEWS

On Tuesday, September 11th, Friends Across the Ages continued its Speaker/Workshop Series with a special roundtable discussion. We spent some time considering how our individual volunteer efforts, and our work as an organization, fit into the larger picture of building a better world. As it turned out, all those in attendance were people who have been with Friends Across the Ages for awhile—anywhere from a few years to over a decade. This gave our discussion an interesting dynamic, offering us a chance to look anew at something we have all been doing for a long time. We considered the blessings we have been given and the challenges we have faced, shared funny stories and sad ones, talked about life and death and everything in between. We concluded our time together with a moment of silent reflection. It was quite a moving evening, and we are hopeful to have more meaningful discussions like this in the future.

Looking ahead, our next session will be in November at which we will have a special presentation on “Elder Sensitivity” by Zsa Zsa Ingram-Fitzpatrick, who is from the State Department of Elder Affairs Office of Volunteer and Community Services in Tallahassee. This is the first time we have welcomed a speaker from out of town for our series—it should be an interesting evening! Mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 13th at 6pm at Barr Systems. Look for more details in our November issue of the Nursing Home News.

SPECIAL APPEAL: DEDICATED ONE-TO-ONE VOLUNTEERS

We can still use a few more very dedicated one-to-one volunteers to join one of our one-to-one visitation groups. These groups involve an initial commitment of at least 12 weeks of one hour visits, with the idea that most volunteers will stick around much longer, as they form lasting friendships with the people they visit at the nursing home. The groups meet briefly at the beginning of the designated time to allow volunteers a chance to check in with one another and support one another, then fan out to visit their friends at the nursing home.

We have 5 groups that meet at various times/days throughout the week, but the groups particularly in need of a few more dedicated volunteers right now are our Sunday 3pm group, our Monday 6:30pm group and our Thursday 6pm group. Volunteers who join these groups should be looking for a challenge and a long term commitment (if not, there are other kinds of volunteering at the nursing home that might be a better fit). Please help us spread the word! For more information, contact us at info@acrosstheages.org.

OCTOBER SPECIAL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you. Here are our special events for October:
