Nursing Home News--February 2013

This is the August 2007 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

If you missed our January Speaker Series presentation by Carolyn Lukert, it was quite an eye-opening event. Carolyn’s topic was “Strengthening Relationships With Those In Your Life Who Are Living With Memory Loss” and in her description of the presentation she said “We will lay a foundation to help all in attendance view dementia from a different perspective - one that doesn't see it as a death sentence, or a ‘long goodbye,’ but as a shift in the way a person experiences the world.”  She did just that, and I think all present were really blown away that something we had viewed in such a negative light could be viewed in such a positive and life-giving manner. I don’t think I can summarize Carolyn’s presentation better than my friend Kelli Brew did, so to see Kelli’s take on it, check out her blog entry here.

Carolyn has recently helped to found a new nonprofit, the Center for Dementia Education. For resources on dementia, contact information is available on their new website,, or check out their facebook page: .

Stay tuned for more information on our next Speaker Series presentation, to be held in March—you won’t want to miss it!

Thank you to all who sent donations in response to our Annual Appeal in December! This is our one and only fundraiser of the year, and we receive no other funding, so we really do count on your generous response in order to keep doing what we do—and once again you did not let us down. We have sent a personal thank you to everyone who donated—except one anonymous angel who sent $50 cash, so we wanted to acknowledge you here: thank you, whoever you are!

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes.  These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you.  If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well.  Here are our special events for February:

Thursday, February 7th,  1:30 – 2:30PM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands  These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Monday, February 11th, 6:30-8:00PM – Valentine Visit at Signature – An annual tradition, the volunteer group at Signature will be passing out flowers to most of the residents during their usual visiting time.

Thursday, February 14th, 2:30 – 3:30PM – Valentine’s Day Party at Parklands  Parklands Nursing and Rehab is throwing a Valentine’s Party for the residents and we are going to help out. Come and join the fun!

Thursday, February 21st 1:30 – 2:30PM – Casino Time at Parklands  A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, February 28th, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in February. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:

Events are open to everyone (children are welcome at most events, please inquire). Please contact us and let us know if you plan to attend one of these events so that our coordinators can be on the lookout for you.  Please call (352) 381-1117 or email
