Nursing Home News--August 2011

This is the October 2007 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

BACK TO SCHOOL—A GREAT TIME TO VOLUNTEER!

The start of the new school year is almost here!  As you are making your plans for the coming school year, you may want to consider nursing home volunteerism.  Perhaps you are on our list but have never volunteered with us… or volunteered with us in the past and have been considering becoming active again.  Perhaps you have a friend or family member who is interested in volunteering.  Or maybe you already are a regular volunteer but would like to add something new to your routine, like one of our group activities.  Whatever your situation, a new school year is a great time to make new plans.  We welcome any questions you might have—just call (352) 381-1117 or contact info@acrosstheages.org.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

We are making some new plans of our own for the future as well.  As we look to the future, we would love to hear from any of our regular volunteers, whether you have been with us for a long time or have recently joined us, for input on how Friends Across the Ages can best support nursing home volunteerism in our area.  What aspects of our current program do you find most helpful?  What ideas do you have for changes we could make in the way we do things?  What would you most hope to see in the Friends Across the Ages of the future?  Most of all, what motivates you personally as a volunteer and what can we do to help support that and encourage that same spirit of volunteerism in others?  Contact Allison Blay at allison.blay@acrosstheages.org if you have anything you would like to share.

AUGUST SPECIAL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes.  These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you.  If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well.  Here are our special events for July:

Thursday, August 4th,  1:30 – 2:30PM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands – These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Thursday, August 11th,  1:30 – 2:30PM – Casino Time at Parklands – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, August 25, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in August. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!
