Nursing Home News--September 2014

This is the September 2014 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

presented by Patricia Krogh and Courtney Quirie of Haven Hospice

Wednesday, October 1st, 6:00 – 7:00 PM

Haven Hospice E.T. York Care Center

4200 NW 90th Blvd, Gainesville

Free and Open to the Public

For our Fall edition of the Friends Across the Ages Speaker Series, Haven Hospice will be offering a two-part presentation for us. The first part, presented by Public Relations Manager Patricia Krogh, will help to dispel some myths about Hospice care and services—what it is and isn’t. The second part, presented by Director of Volunteer Services Courtney Quirie, will be a brief talk about volunteering with patients at the end of life. We will then have time for questions and answers.

We strongly encourage all of our volunteers, friends, and supporters to attend. Did you know that many nursing home residents receive Hospice care? This will be a wonderful learning opportunity, helpful for nursing home volunteers and anyone who interacts with people near the end of their lives—family members, friends, and others.

This Speaker Series presentation will be held Wednesday, October 1 from 6:00 – 7:00 PM in the meeting room at Haven Hospice E.T. York Care Center, 4200 NW 90th Boulevard, Gainesville Florida 32606. It is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Refreshments will be provided. Contact us at or (352) 381-1117 for more information or to RSVP.

This coming Sunday, September 7th at 3pm at Park Meadows, a few of our musically inclined younger volunteers will be joining Steve on his guitar for a little flute/oboe/piano/guitar concert. All are welcome to join us for the festivities—and to bring an instrument if you play one! Contact us at for more information.

As a reminder to anyone else who is has gifts they would like to share whether it be music, crafts, magic tricks, etc., the residents always enjoy having some different folks come out to see them. If you are an individual who would like to participate in one of our Friends Across the Ages events, let us know. If you have a larger group who wants to hold your own event, we can help put you in touch with a local nursing home to set that up. Contact us at for more details.

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events. Here are our special events for September:
