Nursing Home News--November 2016

This is the November 2016 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages Nursing Home Network

This coming Saturday, November 5th, we will be holding our first ever “Not-So-Talented” Show! The fun will begin at 10:00 AM at Terrace Health and Rehabilitation. The show will involve talents of all kinds. It could be something you are actually good at, or something you think would be funny to share (for instance, say one is terrible at magic tricks, and wants to give a “not-so-magical” performance). We hope to have a mixture of residents and volunteers performing. We also need volunteers to cheer on the performers, hang out with the residents, and pass out refreshments and prizes. If you would like to participate, please contact us at and we will fill you in on all the details.

During this season of Thanksgiving, we would like to express our thanks to all of our volunteers and supporters for all you do throughout the year to serve our brothers and sisters in nursing homes, and to make Friends Across the Ages Nursing Home Volunteer Network the unique community that it is. Whether you are a regular weekly one-to-one volunteer, a board member, a supporter, or occasional participant, we appreciate you and all you do. If we’ve learned anything from our years with this organization, it is that seemingly small things really do make a big difference. We feel privileged to know so many caring people through this organization, and want you to know how much we value your participation in this endeavor to “bridge generations through ageless friendship.”

Mark your calendars now for the annual Friends Across the Ages Holiday Party!  It will be held Sunday, December 4th from 2:30-4:30PM at North Florida Rehab and Specialty Care. This annual event has become a long standing tradition with our organization.  We begin with some caroling with the residents in the dining room, and then proceed to the conference room for holiday treats, volunteer recognitions, and holiday visiting time with one another.  All volunteers, supporters, friends and family are welcome. Watch for more information in our December Nursing Home News.

We are preparing to send out our winter mailer for this year, with our fall/winter edition of our newsletter, The Bridge.  If you have moved in the past year, or have other updates to your contact information, please let us know as soon as possible!  Send any updates to   And watch your mailbox in December!

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events. Here are our special events for November:

Wednesday, November 2nd, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands – These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab. This month we plan to share stories about Thanksgiving memories.

Saturday, November 5th, 10:00 AM “Not So Talented Show” at Terrace Health and Rehab – See article above for details, and contact us at if you’d like to join in the fun!

Wednesday, November 9th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – Casino Time at Parklands – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, November 17th, 2:30-3:30 PM – Birthday celebration – Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in October. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:

Events are open to everyone (children are welcome at most events, please inquire). Please contact us at and let us know if you plan to attend one of these events so that our coordinators can be on the lookout for you.
