Nursing Home News -- November 2007

9th Year of the “Nursing Home News”

Welcome to the beginning of the NINTH year of the Nursing Home News email.  Amazingly, it was November 1999 when the first issue was sent out.  Back then we only had about 10 volunteers, and the name “Friends Across the Ages” hadn’t even been dreamed up yet.

In some ways, not much has changed since November 1999.  We had three events that month – a bingo game, a singing night, and we celebrated the 99th birthday of one of our most beloved residents – Icelene Johnson (some of you who go all the way back to those days will surely remember her antics).  Icelene had no family that we knew of, and always appreciated our company.  When she died a few months later, a butterfly garden was planted in her memory in the back courtyard of the nursing home, and it is still there today.

NURSING HOME UPCOMING EVENTS

Friday, November 2nd, 11AM – 2PM – Trip to the Parade – Thank you to everyone who responded to my urgent request for volunteers!  We now have plenty of volunteers, and 13 residents intend to go with us to the parade.  Look for us on the South side of University Avenue, right around 10th Street.

Sunday, November 4th, 2:30 – 3:30PM – Arts N Crafts! – A group of volunteers, led by longtime Friends volunteer Erica Ross, will be meeting us at Gainesville Health Care Center for a fall-themed arts n’ crafts event.  They already have supplies to make wall posters for the residents to put their names on and display.  In addition, they are bringing sugar free candy and pumpkin bread!  Thanks to all these great volunteers!

Monday, November 12th, 2:30 – 4PM -- Casino Time! – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab -- At 2:30 there will be a bingo game.  Once we are finished with Bingo, we really up the stakes and move on to Blackjack!  The residents will be playing for “Bingo Bucks” and prizes.

Saturday, November 17th, TBA – Some of the students of local music teacher Christine Alicot will be performing for the residents at Park Meadows nursing home.  The details are still being worked out, but the residents will be looking forward to it for sure.

Thursday, November 29th, 3-4PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in November. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!
