“HEARING VS. LISTENING”

Presented by M. Violet Asmuth, Ph.D.

Tuesday, March 13, 2012 from 6-7:30pm at Barr Systems

Free and Open to the Public

Do you assume that you are a good listener because you hear well? Listening is a skill that one can improve with practice, while hearing is a physical reaction to sound. Dr. Vi Asmuth teaches a course on “Listening” at UF and will present an overall view of the material in this special presentation for Friends Across the Ages.

Vi was a weekly visitor/volunteer with Friends Across the Ages for almost eight years at Park Meadows, and also served as coordinator for Friends volunteers at Park Meadows for much of that time. She received her doctorate in Communication with an emphasis on Communication and Aging. Vi’s dissertation was on the topic of interpersonal relationships between residents and Certified Nurse Assistants.

This presentation is part of the new Friends Across the Ages Speaker/Workshop Series, offered four times a year during our membership meetings. We think you will find it helpful whether you are a new volunteer, a long-time volunteer, or someone who is just interested in this topic to apply the insights to other settings. So please consider attending, and spread the word to anyone else you know who might be interested!

This workshop will be held Tuesday, March 13 from 6-7:30pm at Barr Systems, located at 4500 NW 27th Avenue. Directions can be found at www.acrosstheages.org/directions.asp under the heading “Friends Across the Ages Office.” Contact info@acrosstheages.org for more information.
