Nursing Home News--March 2015

This is the March 2014 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

Our wonderful board member Leah Craig is working on putting together a new Friends Across the Ages t-shirt for us. These t-shirts will be available at our Spring Volunteer Appreciation party (and we will distribute them to those who can’t make it to the party). Each of our regular Friends Across the Ages volunteers is eligible for a FREE t-shirt, as a token of our appreciation for all you do. Those who are not regular volunteers are invited to purchase a t-shirt for $10.

If you would like a t-shirt, please fill out this order form so that we can have an idea of how many to order in each size:

The deadline to complete the order form is March 20th. Please go ahead and fill out the order form now, so you don’t forget! Thanks again to Leah for organizing this!

SPRING FESTIVAL (April 4th-11th)

Our annual Spring Festival is coming up very soon! The festival will be held the week of April 4th-11th, with events at the various nursing homes we serve throughout the week. We will conclude the festival with our annual Spring Volunteer Appreciation Party on Sunday, April 12th from 12:30 -2:30pm. The party is always a special time, held in the beautiful courtyard at Barr Systems with food, music, and special recognitions for volunteers. All members and supporters of Friends, plus family, friends, and anyone else who is interested are welcome and encouraged to attend this celebration, which is our biggest event of the year. All are welcome at any of the events of the Spring Festival as well.

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you. If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well. Here are our special events for March:

Wednesday, March 4th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands – These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Wednesday, March 11th, 10:30 – 11:30PM – Casino Time at Parklands – A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Wednesday, March 18th, 10:30 – 11:30PM – St. Patrick’s Day Party at Parklands – The luck of the Irish be with you! Join us for a belated bit of blarney at Parklands Nursing and Rehab. The festivities will include an Irish sing-a-long with such tunes as “Danny Boy” and “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.”

Wednesday, March 18th, 2:30 – 3:30 PM –“Helping Hands” at Park Meadows – A new group has formed at Park Meadows Health and Rehab called the “Helping Hands” group. Residents, volunteers, and staff come together to do projects for others in need. The group is currently writing letters of encouragement to women around the country who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and are undergoing treatment. This project was started to provide encouragement to women who have little to no support in this emotional and physical journey. It is aptly named “Girls Love Mail.” Come help the Helping Hands group write letters, or if you’re not able to make it, consider writing a letter on your own. You can find more information on their website:

Thursday, March 26th, 2:30 - 3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in March. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:

Events are open to everyone (children are welcome at most events, please inquire). Please contact us and let us know if you plan to attend one of these events so that our coordinators can be on the lookout for you. Please call (352) 381-1117 or email
