Nursing Home News-February 2012

As we have shared with you previously, starting in January, Friends Across the Ages began holding optional membership meetings as a chance to connect with other members. Four times a year, a speaker/workshop series will be offered during the membership meetings with presentations and opportunities for discussion about various topics of interest to nursing home volunteers.

For our first meeting in January, Friends board member Carolyn Lukert gave a fantastic presentation on strategies for how to make nursing home visits as effective and meaningful as possible. About 15 people attended, a mix of old and new volunteers, and one or two others who were just interested in the topic to help with visits to family members in care facilities. We want to extend a huge THANK YOU to Carolyn for kicking off the speaker series with a bang!

Coming up in March will be a presentation on the topic “Listening” by M. Violet Asmuth, Ph.D. Vi is a long time member of Friends Across the Ages and also teaches on this topic at UF. This meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 13th from 6-7:30pm at Barr Systems. Watch our March Nursing Home News for further details.

Also, note that we will be having a February membership meeting as well, on Tuesday February 14th from 6-7:30pm at Barr Systems. We will not have a speaker at this meeting, but it will still be a chance for members to connect with one another, and to join us for some Valentine’s Day treats. It will also be a meeting for our board members, and we will be discussing plans for our annual Spring Festival, which will be coming up in April. All are welcome to come share ideas! Barr Systems is located at 4500 NW 27th Avenue. Directions can be found at under the heading “Friends Across the Ages Office.” Contact for more information.

Once again, we want to remind you that we are making some changes in the way we do things with Friends Across the Ages and the way we see ourselves as an organization. We are shifting to being “network” of nursing home volunteers and other supporters, rather than an overseeing organization for volunteers. If you would like to learn more, a synopsis of the changes can be found in our most recent edition of our snail mail newsletter, The Bridge—follow this link for an online copy:

If you are already a volunteer with us, then you are already officially a “member” of our network. If you are not already volunteering with us, but would like to become a member, please let us know! You do not have to be a volunteer and you do not need to live in Gainesville. Anyone who is interested in supporting nursing home volunteerism, and interested in being part of the community that is Friends Across the Ages can join. Contact Allison at for more information. A big welcome to all those who have recently joined our network!

Note: Our website still reflects the old system, but within the next few months we hope to launch a completely redesigned website—stay tuned!

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you. If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well. Here are our special events for February:

Thursday, February 9th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands – These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.
