Nursing Home News--April 2012

This is the March 2012 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

JOIN US FOR OUR ANNUAL SPRING FESTIVAL AND

SPRING VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION PARTY!

Have you ever thought about visiting a nursing home? Are you a regular Friends volunteer who wonders what visiting the other nursing homes might be like? Friends Across the Ages is hosting a weeklong festival of events at each of the nursing homes we serve. These events begin this Saturday, April 7, and are open to anyone who wants to try something new—see below for a complete listing of Spring Festival events.

The festival will culminate in our annual Spring Volunteer Appreciate Party on Saturday, April 14 from 2-4pm in the beautiful courtyard at Barr Systems. This party is our biggest event of the year so we encourage all volunteers, supporters, family and friends to join us! Please contact info@acrosstheages.org for more information or to RSVP for any of the Spring Festival events.

SECOND SPEAKER SERIES PRESENTATION A SUCCESS!

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Vi Asmuth for her excellent presentation this past month on “Hearing vs. Listening.” This was the second in our newly launched Speaker Series, which will be offered four times a year during our monthly membership meetings. Vi teaches a course on “Listening” at UF and presented an overall view of the material at this workshop.

Watch for more Speaker Series presentations coming up in September and November—you won’t want to miss them!

SPRING FESTIVAL EVENTS

Saturday, April 7th, 1-3pm—Spring Scrimmage Party at Signature: Volunteers and Residents will come together at Signature Health Care to watch the “Orange and Blue Debut” Gator football spring scrimmage game on TV. Food, football and fun—what more could anyone ask?

Tuesday, April 10th, 10:30am – 12pm— Old Time Sing-along at Palm Garden: An old fashioned sing-along will be held in a small private dining room at Palm Garden with coffee and goodies to enjoy. (Space is limited, so let us know if you are coming.)

Wednesday, April 11th, 2:30-4pm – “Spring Break in Las Vegas” at Parklands: Come watch the Parklands Nursing and Rehab dining room transform into the casino floor at the MGM Grand. Volunteers will help deal the cards or team up with residents to play poker, blackjack, craps, and other games for fun prizes and the thrill of being named “King or Queen of the High Rollers.” No prior gambling experience required!

Thursday, April 12th, 6:00-7:00pm- Luau party and BINGO at Gainesville Health Care Center: Palm trees and sandy beaches may be far away so we're bringing the tropics to us for our annual spring festival event day! Please join us for the evening of desserts and BINGO with the residents of Gainesville Health Care Center.

Friday, April 13th, 2-3pm– Reaction Reading at Park Meadows: We welcome you to join Vi Asmuth, Ph.D., and the volunteers of Park Meadows Health and Rehab for a choral poetry reading program. Residents react with active participation, knowledge, opinions, feelings, and imagination. Since it will be Friday the 13th, we may look at some poems with a scary theme!

Saturday, April 14th, 10-11:30am– “Celebrate Spring” at NFRSC: Help bring the beauty of the season indoors to enjoy with the residents of North Florida Rehab and Specialty Care. We'll be making a spring-themed craft and we need plenty of creative helpers, so bring the whole family to this kid-friendly event!

And the grand finale…

Saturday, April 14th, 2:00-4:00pm— Volunteer Appreciation Party at Barr Systems: We would like to thank all of our volunteers (old and new) for their dedication and service at this, our biggest event of the year! Family and friends are welcome to join us for an afternoon of food, music, ice cream, and special recognitions for volunteers in the beautiful courtyard at Barr Systems. We will have something for all of our volunteers so please come if you can!

Please contact info@acrosstheages.org for more information or to RSVP for any of the above events.

ADDITIONAL EVENTS IN APRIL

Thursday, April 5th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands – These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Thursday, April 26th, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in April. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

***Note: There will be no Friends Across the Ages membership meeting in April. Our annual volunteer appreciation party will take the place as the gathering for our members this month.
