Nursing Home News--April 2013

This is the March 2012 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

Have you ever thought about visiting a nursing home? Are you a regular Friends volunteer who wonders what visiting the other nursing homes might be like? Friends Across the Ages is hosting a weeklong festival of events at each of the nursing homes we serve. These events begin today, and are open to anyone who wants to try something new—see below for a complete listing of Spring Festival events.

The festival will culminate in our annual Spring Volunteer Appreciate Party on Sunday, April 7 from 2-4pm in the beautiful courtyard at Barr Systems. This party is our biggest event of the year so we encourage all volunteers, supporters, family and friends to join us! Please contact for more information or to RSVP for any of the Spring Festival events.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Tom Rinkoski for his excellent presentation this past month on “Matching Caregiving Skills and Actions to the Stages of Progression of Dementia and Alzheimer’s.” We had a great turnout at this event, our first time holding it at the Millhopper Library. Tom is the Caregiver Coach at Elder Options, the Mid Florida Area Agency on Aging. He does Caregiver Trainings, named “Become a Savvy Caregiver,” in 16 counties in North Central Florida with special attention to caregivers working with persons with Dementia and/or Alzheimer’s. This presentation was part of our Friends Across the Ages Speaker Series, offered four times a year; all of these events are free and open to the public. Watch for more Speaker Series presentations coming up in September and November—you won’t want to miss them!

Monday, April 1st, 11am – 12pm— Drum Circle at Palm Garden: Join us for a drum circle involving as many residents and volunteers as possible.  While it may be a bit noisy, we will have great fun as our creative self-expression fills the halls and rooms of Palm Garden

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2-3pm– Reaction Reading at Park Meadows: We welcome you to join Dr. Vi Asmuth for a choral poetry reading program. Residents react with active participation, knowledge, opinions, feelings, and imagination.   We will have decorations and refreshments for this elegant afternoon affair at Park Meadows.

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2:30-4pm – “Spring Break in Las Vegas” at Parklands: Come watch the Parklands Nursing and Rehab dining room transform into the casino floor at the MGM Grand. Volunteers will help deal the cards or team up with residents to play poker, blackjack, craps, roulette and other games for fun and prizes. No prior gambling experience required! ***Update: this event may need to be moved to a different date—please contact us if you are planning on attending***

Thursday, April 4th, 6:00-7:00pm- Soda Fountain and BINGO at Gainesville Health Care Center: Come enjoy a "blast from the past" at a 50's themed evening for the residents of GHCC.  Volunteers will serve root beer floats, coke floats and more.   Bingo prizes for residents will include vintage 50's candy, crossword puzzles, and many other fun items.

Friday, April 5th, 10:30am -12:00pm– “Celebrate Spring” at NFRSC: Help bring the beauty of the season indoors to enjoy with the residents of North Florida Rehab and Specialty Care. We'll be making a spring-themed craft and we need plenty of creative helpers, so bring the whole family to this kid-friendly event!

Saturday, April 6th, 1-3pm—Spring Scrimmage Party at Signature: Volunteers and Residents will come together at Signature Health Care to watch the “Orange and Blue Debut” Gator football spring scrimmage game on TV. Food, football and fun—what more could anyone ask?

And the grand finale…
