Nursing Home News--September 2016

This is the September 2016 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

We would like to extend a very warm welcome back to all of our college student volunteers who were gone for the summer and have now returned. We know your friends at the nursing home are glad to see you and are eager to hear all your stories from the summer. We are glad you are back!

We would also like to welcome those new volunteers who have joined us since the beginning of the school year. New volunteer applications are coming in all the time. It is always so heartening to meet people who care enough to take that step of becoming a volunteer in order to share their time with our friends at the nursing homes. We are glad to have you all with us!

We are hoping to do what we are calling a “Not-So-Talented” show at one of the nursing homes later this month or the beginning of next month. We are still working out the details, but it will most likely be on a Saturday morning, and will involve talents of all kinds. It could be something you are actually good at, or something you think would be funny to share (for instance, say one is terrible at magic tricks, and wants to give a “not-so-magical” performance). We hope to have a mixture of residents and volunteers performing. If you would like to participate, please contact us at and we will be sure to give you all the details once they are set.

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes. These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events. Here are our special events for September:

Wednesday, September 7th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – “Storytellers’ Society” at ParklandsThese monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Wednesday, September 14th, 10:30-11:30 AM— “Poker Party” at Parklands A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab Come help play poker with the residents, or just help cheer them on! No real money is involved; residents play for the honor of having our Championship Trophy for the month.

Thursday, September 29th, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration at ParklandsHelp us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in September. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Date/Time TBD—“Not-So-Talented” Show—See article above for details and contact us at if you’d like to participate.

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:
