Nursing Home News--June 2012

This is the March 2012 newsletter of Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach

Summer is a time when many of our college student volunteers are away. But fortunately, it is also a time when some folks who are in town for the summer have a little more time on their hands, and are ready to make the leap into volunteering. We have had several new members join our volunteer network already in the past couple of weeks, and are hopeful that over the coming weeks we will have some more. If you are not already volunteering, or used to volunteer but have gotten away from it, perhaps summer would be a good time for you to consider making the commitment? Or perhaps you know someone who might be interested? The residents of our area nursing homes are here year round, and are ready for some summer fun! For more information about ways to get involved, contact

A quick update on our two special projects this summer:

“I Feel Pretty” Party: We are still planning on doing this event in honor of our friend and mentor, Ruth Hazen, who passed away in February. Ruth volunteered for many years doing manicures for residents because, as she put it, “Everyone deserves to feel pretty.” We want to do an event with the residents that involves manicures, hair, and/or anything else that helps them feel pretty as Ruth would want them to. We are now aiming for July for this event, and will be solidifying plans in the next week or two. If you or someone you know would be interested in helping out with this event, please contact us asap at and let us know your schedule so that we can take that into account when setting the day/time for this event.

Friends Across the Ages Book: The other project we are planning this summer is a Friends Across the Ages book, which we will dedicate to Ruth. This is an idea we have had floating around for a long time—something that would gather together some of the stories from our volunteers and residents from over the years, as well as tips and wisdom that those interested in nursing home volunteerism might find helpful. We welcome contributions for this book. So, to all of our volunteers and supporters—if you have a story you would like to share, a poem, some nuggets of wisdom, a picture, some artwork, anything along those lines, please consider sending it in to us! Contact Allison at for more information.

Thursday, June 7th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – “Storytellers’ Society” at ParklandsThese monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.

Thursday, June 21th, 1:30 – 2:30PM – Casino Time at Parklands A monthly event at Parklands Nursing and Rehab – Come help deal blackjack and poker for the residents (who play for prizes), or just help cheer them on!

Thursday, June 28th, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in June. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

**Note: There are no Friends Across the Ages membership meetings in June or July—watch for details about our fall meetings in the August Nursing Home News.**

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:
