Friends Across the Ages Nursing Home News August 2017

The start of the new school year is almost here!  We are excited to welcome back many of our college student volunteers this month who have been away over the summer, and also some of our other regular volunteers who have been traveling.  Please let us know if you need any assistance as you get back in the swing of things.  Also, the beginning of a new school year is a great time to begin a new volunteer endeavor.  Perhaps you are on our list but have never volunteered with us… or volunteered with us in the past and have been considering becoming active again.  Perhaps you have a friend or family member who is interested in volunteering.  Or maybe you already are a regular volunteer but would like to add something new to your routine, like one of our group activities.  Whatever your situation, a new school year is a great time to make new plans.  We welcome any questions you might have—just contact

Please join us Saturday, August 12th at 10:30AM at North Florida Rehab and Specialty Care for a special Karaoke Party to kick off the school year.  We will provide the songs and sweets, you provide the voices—at least to cheer others on if you don’t want to sing!  Contact to RSVP or for more information.

Each month, in addition to groups that meet weekly for regular volunteering/visitation, Friends Across the Ages sponsors a few special events and activities at various nursing homes.  These events require no ongoing commitment, though we do ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend any of these events so that we can be on the lookout for you.  If you would like more information about our weekly visitation groups and becoming a regular Friends Across the Ages volunteer, please let us know that as well.  Here are our special events for August:

Wednesday, August 2nd, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – “Storytellers’ Society” at Parklands – These monthly group gatherings are a wonderful way to share, reminisce, and truly get to know the residents at Parklands Nursing and RehabThis month we will be finishing the book on Teddy Roosevelt that we have been reading together for the past few months, and discussing any of the residents’ favorite parts of the book.

Wednesday, August 9th, 10:00 – 11:30 AM – Memorial Service for “Gamblin’ Gus” and Poker Party at Parklands – Recently, we lost a dear resident friend of ours at Parklands Nursing and Rehab, whom we lovingly called “Gamblin’ Gus” because he always played poker with us, and always kept things interesting!  We will hold a short memorial service for him at 10:00, sharing memories and music.  This will be followed by our usual monthly poker game (no real money involved) at 10:30, dedicated to Gus.  All are invited to join us in remembering Augusta “Gamblin’ Gus” Hall.

Saturday, August 12th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM – Karaoke Party at NFRSC –See article above, and please consider joining us for this special event at North Florida Rehab to kick off the school year.  Contact if you plan to attend, or for more information.

Wednesday, August 16th, 10:30-11:30AM—Book Presentation with Carolina – One of our Parklands volunteers, Carolina Porras, has recently released a travel book about artists’ retreats that she co-authored.  She will share her book and some of her adventures with the group at Parklands Nursing and Rehab.  Please join us for this very special presentation!

Thursday, August 31st, 2:30-3:30 PM -- Birthday celebration -- Help us wish a happy birthday to all residents of Parklands Nursing and Rehab with birthdays in August. Meet us in the dining room where we will have singing and cake. Volunteers are needed to help gather the residents together, serve the cake, sing, clean up, etc.  Do you play an instrument or have some other talent?  We are always looking for new entertainment for the party – let us know!

Please see the above list for locations of the various events.  Directions to all the nursing homes can be found at:

Events are open to everyone (children are welcome at most events, please inquire). Please contact us and let us know if you plan to attend one of these events so that our coordinators can be on the lookout for you.  Please email .
