About

The Nursing Home Volunteer Auxiliary, Inc. was founded by the Gainesville Woman's Club in 1983. The goal was to fulfill a humane and philanthropic role, greatly needed in our community, by providing trained volunteers to enhance the quality of life of residents living in nursing homes. Sir James Barrie's words "Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves" were adopted as the NHVA motto.

Friends Across the Ages nursing home outreach was originally started in 1999 under the auspices of the Christian Service Ministry of St. Augustine Church in Gainesville.

In May of 2002, the two organizations merged to better serve the needy residents of nursing homes. The joint organization, which has pooled each group's energy and resources, now goes by the name Friends Across the Ages, although they still trace their roots back to the original Woman's Club project in 1983.

In September of 2003, Friends Across the Ages was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as a Faith in Action program. Through Faith in Action, Americans of every faith—including Catholics, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, and Protestants—work together to improve the lives of their neighbors with long-term health needs. As a part of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Faith in Action involves nearly 1,000 programs offering free interfaith volunteer caregiving services nationwide.

Friends Across the Ages is a 501(c)(3) charity, so donations are federally tax-deductible. Donations go towards supplies for events at nursing homes, volunteer appreciation, and our quarterly newsletter, The Bridge. Our only paid staff member is our 10-hour per week Administrative Coordinator.
